==Early Life and Career==

Cohen was born in 1953 and grew up in Port Chester (New York) between Greenwich, Conn., and Rye (N.Y.)
He comes from a Jewish family and attended Hebrew schools; his mother was a letter writer and a bookkeeper and his father was a salesman who fought Nazis at the Battle of the Bulge in WWII.
When he was still a Law student at the Long Island University, he teamed with attorney Lynne Stewart for representing Kathy Boudin, member of Weather Underground and May 19th Communist Organization.
They both helped fight the New York state prosecution of the organization who stole 1.6 million dollars to fund a war against USA, in October 20, 1981 in which Boudin had participated. The robbery is known as the 1981 Brinks Robbery.
After graduating, in the 80s, Cohen worked for seven years at the Legal Aid Society in the Bronx. He also worked on the Winnebago, Omaha and Santee Sioux reservations for an anti-poverty program initiated by President Lyndon Johnson in the mid 60s, as a VISTA volunteer.
After VISTA, he headed a drug program for homeless teens in Westchester County (N.Y.).In 1983 he earned a J.D. degree at Pace University Law School.
Stanley Cohen has been a disciple of leftist celebrity lawyer William Kunstler with whom he helped in 1986, Larry Davis, a black man accused of robbing and killing drug dealers.
In 1990 Cohen teamed up once again with his mentor Kunstler. They joined Lynne Stewart ( who was indicted for this case) for the defense of the sheikh Abdul Rahman Yasin, the mastermind of the World Trade Center bombingin 1993.
As activist and attorney for human rights Cohen has been many times in Gaza Strip for helping Palestinians. One of his clients was Mousa Mohammed Abu Marzook, member of Hamas; he also defended Hezbollah and al-Qaeda members such as a relative of Bin Laden, his son in law, case that generates harsh criticism.
He has been “banned from Israel and Egypt and, possibly, Jordan and Kuwait because of" his "legal work and politics- seen by some regimes as dangerous to their “security.””〔(Prison America Written by Stanley Cohen, August 14, 2015, by Freeanons )〕
Cohen in the 90s, was often assisted by the well known American poet Peter Spagnuolo〔(New York Magazine 8 Jul 1996, page 39 )〕 in the case of the squatters reclaiming the East 13th Street buildings.〔(The Squatters of East 13th Street, Creating Digital History )〕
Stanley Cohen has been involved recently in a relevant attempt of negotiation for the release of Peter Kassig, held hostage by ISIS. By request of an old friend, the navy veteran John Penley,〔The race to save Peter Kassig, Shiv Malik, Ali Younes, Spencer Ackerman and Mustafa Khalili, Thursday 18 December 2014, The Guardian ()〕 Cohen accepted the role of intermediary.
According to The Intercept: “While he lacked connections with Islamic State itself, Cohen was able to reach out to Jordan-based Islamist scholar Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi, and convince him to open discussions with Turki Binali"〔U.S.Inaction Killed Hostage Kassig, Says Lawyer, Murtaza Hussain, Dec.23 2014, The Intercept ()〕 but the negotiation failed when Abu Muhammad Maqdisi was arrested.〔How a Radical Lawyer Set for Prison Joined Longtime U.S. Gov’t Foe in Failed Bid to Free a Hostage, Tuesday, December 30, 2014, Democracy Now!
